4- Month Sleep Regression:
The four‑month sleep regression can feel like a sudden plot twist in your parenting journey. One day your baby is sleeping beautifully, and the next you’re navigating short naps, restless nights, and a little one who is resisting sleep. Nothing changed, but your baby did. Your perplexed, exhausted and what once worked, no longer does. What many parents don’t realize is that this stage isn’t just a “phase”—it’s a major developmental shift in your baby’s sleep. Understanding what’s happening can avoid frustration, build confidence and help you to support your baby as they learn to connect sleep cycles and develop long‑term sleep skills.
What is the 4-month Sleep Regression?
The 4- Month Sleep Regression is a permanent biological shift in a baby’s sleep cycles and when three naps naturally form. Your baby was going from two sleep cycles to now four.
Signs of the regression:
Early rising
Short naps
Frequent night wakings
Popping awake after you have transferred them into their sleep space
Does the regression end?
The four‑month sleep regression is unique because it doesn’t simply “end” on its own. Instead, it marks a permanent shift in your baby’s sleep cycles. Infants begin transitioning to more adult‑like sleep patterns, and transition from two sleep cycles to four. Due to this, if a baby hasn’t yet learned the skill of settling themselves at bedtime, they may struggle to do so during nighttime awakenings or naps.
When does the regression happen?
Generally, this regression happens 16 weeks from the baby’s estimated due date.
How do I help my baby get through the regression?
· Ensure your baby is not overtired- Try placing them down at consistent times for sleep.
· Place them down awake vs drowsy/asleep- How a baby falls asleep is what they will seek every time they wake up.
· Provide a consistent sleep routine – Consistency avoids confusion and sends sleepy cues to the brain that it’s time for sleep.
